Listening

Good communication has two parts to it; speaking and listening. For any relationship to thrive there has to be good communication. The same is true for our relationship with God.

Throughout the pages of scripture we see God communicating with His people. From Moses to Elijah, David to Nehemiah, Jesus and his disciples; God spoke with and to his people to give them instruction about His purposes in their lives.

Since God does not change and is the same “yesterday, today, and forever”...

And, He has demonstrated, before and through Jesus, that He is our very own personal God who cares about the details of our lives...

Then, that means He still wants to speak to us.

When it comes to communication with God, most of us are only good at the speaking part. But what about listening?

The practice of listening to God is simply learning to identify and discern His voice through the various ways He speaks to us. It’s straightforward and simple. But, this simple practice is not easy. It requires that we build in space in our lives to eliminate the noise. And, we believe that in the quiet spaces we’ll begin to hear God’s promptings through His written word and the still small voice within.

Learning to listen to God will change your life. When you can hear His voice you can receive His encouragement, instruction, and correction. Ultimately, you can fully receive the love of your Heavenly Father.

What is the practice of listening?

Before you begin:

This seven day experience is designed to help you create some space to be with God by learning the practice of Listening to God.

The first day of this practice will ease you into the process of listening by getting a feel for the process. Then, over the next five days you will ask God about five different areas of your life - Faith, Family, Finances, Fullness, and Fun. On day seven, you will spend time reflecting on what you experienced and let God speak to you about how to integrate this practice into your spiritual rhythm.

Our hope is that over the course of seven days you learn to hear God’s voice as you create space to be still and listen.

Before you jump in, check out these five best practices that will help you with this experience.

Best Practice 1

Settling first

We highly recommend you engage in our one week practice on Settling before you begin. Learning to settle is a “first things first” when it comes to listening to God.

Best Practice 2

Set aside 20-30 mins

Set aside 20-30 minutes of quiet space each day. Put this time on your calendar and create a daily discipline to meet with God.

Best Practice 3

No distractions

You will want to be free of distraction. If you are using your phone for this experience, set it to Do Not Disturb.

Best Practice 4

Get a journal

We will ask you to write out your thoughts each day as part of this experience. Trust us, it’s an important part of the process.

Best Practice 5

Invite God in

Don’t forget to invite God into this. Consider a simple prayer like this:

“God, I’m here. I want what you want for my life. Speak, Lord, I’m listening.”
